Ainda que elogiada sobretudo nos aspectos técnicos Melhor Filme e Melhor Realizador são alguns dos troféus que a película poderá arrecadar, no último caso replicando o triunfo registado nos Globos de Ouro. Moneyball, War Horse e As Serviçais contam com seis nomeações cada.

Na cerimónia a realizar a 26 de Fevereiro, no Kodak Theater, em Los Angeles, concorrem ao título de Melhor Filme nove trabalhos, menos um que nas edições anteriores. A Árvore da Vida, War Horse, The Artist, Moneyball, Meia-Noite em Paris, As Serviçais e Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close estarão na berlinda.

Nas categorias de representação, e ainda tendo os prémios da Associação de Imprensa Estrangeira em Hollywood como barómetro, a Academia de Arte e Ciências Cinematográficas não deixou de fora favoritos a Melhores Actores e Actores Secundários como George Clooney e Christopher Plummer, Glenn Close e Michelle Williams, Octavia Spencer e Rooney Mara (a rapariga da saga Millenium).

Meryl Streep, com o seu retrato de Margaret Thatcher, alcança a sua 17.ª nomeação, um recorde absoluto, pois Katharine Hepburn e Jack Nicholson, os seguintes na lista dos actores mais citados, contam com “apenas” 12 nomeações.

Para Gary Oldman esta é a primeira nomeação em mais de 30 anos de grande ecrã. Brad Pitt, que nunca ganhou nenhum óscar, soma aqui a sua terceira tentativa. Duas fita por si protagonizados concorrem a Melhor Filme.
